My first vintage vehicle was a 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk. My dad lovingly restored that car and, when we went to car shows, it definitely turned heads. Through the years, I’ve owned many classic cars of my own and been to too many car shows to count! The one thing that stands out for all of them is how lovingly detailed each car is. Glenn Auto Mall would like to share these tips for showing your classic car and getting it ready to enter the ring. Lately, I’m partial to classic Buicks, so if you have one you want to show, read on:
Start With a Good Cleaning
You probably keep your classic nice and clean throughout the year, but you’ll need to pay special attention to the engine. You’ve probably noticed that most cars at a show are parked with their hoods up to better show off what they’re running. The best advice is to start with your engine, get all that grease and grime off. Then, scrub off the wheels and rims, finishing off with the body. This way, you’ve tackled all the big stuff first, then you finish off with a nice overall wax and shine.
Now, the Interior
Hopefully, you keep your vintage car garaged. This will help cut down on the time you need to spend cleaning, but it never hurts to give the interior a quick once over. Vacuuming, polishing, and getting rid of any dust will make you car really sing and catch the judge’s eyes.
Invest In a Good Cover
Even if your car is garaged, for those off-season months between shows it’s a good idea to keep your investment covered.
Decide How To Move Your Car
Generally, a classic car isn’t driven to the show; especially after all this cleaning and prep work! If you don’t have a way to tow your classic vehicle yourself, look into renting a flatbed trailer or hiring a towing company that can get your classic to the show with minimal fuss. This is the time to show off your vehicle, you don’t want to park it on the concourse only to have to detail it all over again.
That’s about it. Once your registration is complete and you have your car set up and looking pretty, it’s time for you to go have fun! I’ve always enjoyed walking around shows and admiring all the hard work and dedication folks have put into their classic cars. Please make sure to stop by Glenn Auto Mall and tell them about your experiences, and take a look at some of the new 2015 Buick models they have on display! You’re sure to find a few show-stoppers that are on their way to being considered classics!
